Assaults on police officers and concerns about use of force are both increasing so it is timely that the College of Policing is holding a public consultation on its draft Public and Personal Safety Training Authorised Professional Practice document.
Feedback from police officers is encouraged to ensure the APP meets the needs of those doing the job. You have until 18 January 2024 to provide your thoughts. The consultation documents can be found here:

In a letter to forces, Chief Constable Andy Marsh, CEO of the College of Policing, wrote: "The College committed to developing a new syllabus for safety training following our review of the issue in 2020. Following a year-long in-force trial with Avon and Somerset Police we released our updated curriculum to forces earlier this year, and the new Authorised Professional Practice (APP) document will embed the new approach as the national standard for safety training.
"Our Public and Personal Safety Training APP aims to address both of these challenges, ensuring that officers are able carry out their duties while keeping themselves and the public safe, including those who are being arrested."
It is important that the views of serving officers are taken into account so we will issue further reminders about this consultation as the closing date approaches.
