The government has today announced that police officers across England and Wales are set to receive a 4.2% pay rise.
BTP Federation Chair, Stuart Cowan, has responded to the announcement: "As night follows day, we have yet another testing pay increase. Today’s announcement of 4.2% is simply nowhere near enough in terms of providing financial stability for hard-working officers and their families. It's difficult not to take this as a sign of how valued - or otherwise - police officers are.
"Officers who book on duty to keep the public safe, who are battered and bruised and stretched to their physical and psychological limits, are worth so much more than repeated paltry pay increases.
"Our members are already concerned about the future following the bitterly disappointing budget settlement BTP received. They shouldn’t also have to worry about how this increase will be funded and what else might have to give to achieve it.
"I call on the British Transport Police Authority to use their position to back BTP and our members and be unequivocal in their support for this pay increase and future budget settlements."
The government has stated London weighting will be boosted by 4.2%, "reflecting the demands placed on officers in the capital". The government is also increasing on-call, away-from-home, and hardship allowances by £10.
