This year, players of the BTP Federation lottery have supported charities, sports clubs, community groups and other good causes to the tune of more than £21,000.

Money generated by the lottery is split, with half the proceeds shared as prizes and the other half made available as grants. Players can nominate not-for-profit organisations to receive funding for things such as equipment and running cost. A total of £21,262 was distributed in 2022.

Alongside grants to healthcare and children's charities, several sporty cops successfully applied for grants to help them represent BTP at various events and championships. Amateur athletes are generally responsible for funding their own travel, accommodation and entry fee, which is where the Federation Lottery can assist.

DC Andy Shields from Glasgow received a grant towards the cost of kit for his football team, Clyde Valley Rovers over 35's (pictured above). The photo was taken in April, following a long-awaited win, three games into the season; no wonder they're smiling.

Inspector Jen Baynes from Stockwell also sought support with kit for the BTP team who played in the Police Sport UK Women's Football Championships in Sheffield, in May. The side comprised players from across the UK, most of whom hadn't met before let alone played as a team, so they did brilliantly to get to the quarter finals.

A grant helped DI Andy Selby with the cost of competing in the World Police and Fire Games in Rotterdam in July. He participated in the 200 metres and the javelin.

Inspector Dave Read from Croydon qualified to represent Great Britain at the Age Group European Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships. The event in Munich in August 2022 saw Dave swim 750 metres, cycle 21.8 kilometres and run 5 kilometres (image above).

PC Jenny Atherton, a response officer based in Manchester, received funding towards the cost of participating in the Police Sport UK Blue Lights Horse show.

The event took place at Solihull Riding Club in the West Midlands on Sunday 25 September. Jenny entered the Welsh in-hand class and gained second place with her horse Anwyls Tywysog Llewi - known as Llewi at home. Jenny and Llewi are pictured below.
