BTP Federation reps are in Southampton for the Federation’s Awards of Excellence and annual conference.

The awards take place this evening (23 September), when the winners of Detective Investigation of the Year, Team of the Year, Cop of the Year, Special of the Year, and the top-secret Chair’s Award will be announced. The nominees for all but the final award were put forward by their colleagues.

The awards are preceded by meetings of the Federation’s Management Board, Health and Safety, and Welfare Committees.

On Wednesday 24 September, General Secretary Ryan Griffiths will open the annual conference with the message that “effective, professional and reliable representation for our members has rarely been more crucial than it is now”.

Topics on the agenda

Federation Chair, Stuart Cowan’s speech will highlight officers’ calling to serve the public and how they do so against a backdrop of physical harm (the visible cost), mental harm (the hidden toll) and financial pressure (the unspoken strain). The Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, will deliver a response via pre-recorded video.

Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi and Hugh Ind, the CEO of British Transport Police Authority, will take part in a Q&A session, after which the Federation’s new welfare vehicle will be launched.

During the closed session of the conference, delegates will hear from Reps with responsibility for the Federation’s finances, training, health, safety and the welfare fund. Several motions will be debated, and rule changes will be considered.

This will be followed by a panel discussion with guest speakers aimed at preparing Reps to support members through some of the most challenging operational incidents they may face, and the significant conduct and welfare implications that can result from them.

The outcomes of and reports from the closed sessions will be shared with members after the conference has concluded. Conference sessions are being recorded again this year and will be available to watch via Federation website.
