BTP Federation reps are in Southampton this week for the Federation’s Awards of Excellence and Annual Conference.

About the Awards of Excellence

The awards take place on the evening of Tuesday 23 September, when the winners of Team of the Year, Cop of the Year, Special of the Year, Detective Investigation of the Year and the Chair’s Award will be announced. The nominees for all but the final award were put forward by their colleagues.

Short videos have been made of each winner’s story and will be shared on the Federation’s Facebook and LinkedIn pages.

Chair of BTP Federation, Stuart Cowan, said: “I remain in awe of my colleagues who consistently do all they can to keep the travelling public safe. From preventing and detecting crime, to safeguarding vulnerable rail users, to encouraging those who might otherwise remain silent to report incidents and concerns, they do an exceptional job.

“Their stories don’t always make the news, but they are stories that need to be heard. It is a privilege and a pleasure to champion our members in this way.”

The awards are preceded by meetings of the Federation’s Management Board, Health and Safety, and Welfare Committees.

About the Annual Conference

On Wednesday 24 September, Stuart Cowan will open the annual conference with his keynote speech where he will speak candidly about police pay, recruitment and retention, officer safety, and police conduct and culture.

Chief Constable Lucy D'Orsi will participate in a Q&A session with Ron Barclay-Smith (Chair) and Hugh Ind (CEO) of British Transport Police Authority, after which reps will take part in speed-networking with member service organisations to learn more about the services and support available to Federation members.

After a lunch break, there will be a closed session for Federation reps. Alongside Area Reports compiled by each divisional secretary, the General Secretary and Treasurer will give updates on the Federation's work and finances. Reps will then debate several motions and rule changes, all of which are available to read in this year's conference brochure.

The afternoon will close with an input from legal experts and employment law specialists, Penningtons Manches Cooper.

The outcomes and reports from the closed sessions will be shared with members after the conference. Conference sessions are again being recorded this year and will be available to watch via Federation website.
