Stuart Cowan, Chair of BTP Federation, and Gary Thwaite, CEO of Civil Nuclear Police Federation, have this morning (25 July 2023) begun their 500km sponsored hike from the Lake District to London.
Over the next two weeks the pair will push themselves to their physical and mental limits in aid of the not-for-profit organisation, PTSD999. Having set off from Cockermouth, where CNP Federation is based, this morning they are due to arrive at the BTP Federation office in West Dulwich on Monday 7 August.
As well as raising vital funds, the Blue Light Hike will highlight the challenges of mental health issues amongst police officers and other emergency services staff.
Gary Thwaite from Civil Nuclear Police Federation, said: "It's a sad truth that most of us within policing have lost friends, colleagues or even family members to suicide."
Stuart Cowan, from British Transport Police Federation, added: "I have faced my own challenges as a result of my work, but I consider myself lucky because I took the support that was offered and bounced back."
Gary Hayes from PTSD999 said: "I know from personal experience how difficult it is to live with PTSD, and I am so grateful for the support given by Gary and Stuart. I encourage everyone to support their fundraising efforts and help to make a difference in the lives of others."
