Chairman meets Manchester attack first responders

This morning I paraded at Manchester BTP and spent time with some of the officers who were the first on the scene at Manchester arena last week. These same officers this morning had the opportunity to speak and share a little of their experience with the Secretary of State Chris Grayling MP. Mr Grayling was clearly moved and impressed with the response of BTP and also railway stakeholders who he thanked for their professionalism and commitment.

I also had the pleasure of meeting with PD Mojo and courageous colleagues who preserved the scene, conducted detailed searches and tended to seriously injured people; I am humbled by their compassion and courage. We can't know the impact of what some have seen and dealt with, and my concern - and that of the Federation - remains with their welfare and that of their colleagues.

I'm encouraged that so many officers have already made use of the TRiM process. To those who haven't yet I have said, and will say again, that there are no prizes for managing on your own. Your health and wellbeing is crucial; you might not feel the time is right to seek support now, but it will be there if or when you decide otherwise.

Certain TRiM practitioners are themselves serving police officers/staff and I have sought assurances that they will also have the opportunity to fully debrief too.

Again, I would on behalf of the Federation like to thank my BTP colleagues in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and beyond for their determination and resilience, and not just over the last seven days. I'm proud to be a BTP officer and proud to represent so many fine men and women.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those who have lost loved ones and our support as a Federation will also be with those courageous officers who ran immediately towards danger not knowing within those first few minutes exactly what they were running into. We are here to support those officers and we will continue to do so. Thank you.
