Marathon runners smash fundraising targets

The heat and hard work was worth it - two BTP London Marathon runners have smashed their fundraising targets and raised thousands of pounds for charity.

It was the first time DC Lee Parsons and PSCO India Knight had run a marathon. Both crossed the finish line in respectable times, despite the record temperatures which prevented some runners from completing the course.

Lee ran for the MS Society after his wife was diagnosed with the condition and has so far raised more than £1600. He said:

"I finished (how I don't know) in 5:52. I was going strong until mile 12 when my knees and groin both throbbed in pain. I felt like dropping out at times, but total strangers shouting my name kept me going.

"I am slightly disappointed with my time but considering the heat, it was just about completing it. All in all, I'm proud of myself that I am a London Marathon finisher."

India also found the heat a challenge so as well as drinking plenty of water on the route, took to emptying bottles over her head to keep cool. She also found the support from onlookers to be a huge boost:

"I felt amazing and loved every part of the day. The support from strangers stood spectating was unbelievable and the atmosphere the whole way around was electric.

"The first people I saw as I crossed the finish line were my sister and my mum, and their partners. They supported me the whole way, standing to cheer me on at different points on the course. I keep feeling really emotional about my achievement."

Firearms officer, Liam Harvey, ran the marathon to raise money for police peer support charity Call 4 Backup. We're hoping to catch up with him soon to find out how he got on.
