BTP Virgin Trains Divisional Cup

Five BTP officers are in a league of their own after organising a charity football tournament.

The BTP Virgin Trains Divisional Cup is an 11-a-side tournament involving four teams of officers and staff from across B-Division (London), C-Division (North West), C-Division (North East) and D-Division Scotland.

The first match was held on 19 June at Stenhousemuir FC in Glasgow. The second event is in Leeds on 31 August, with the third and final set of matches in London on 23 October.

The tournament is sponsored by Virgin Trains, which enjoys an excellent working relationship with BTP, and is raising money for the Railway Children and Rethink Mental Illness. So far £480 has been raised.

BTP officers Stuart Cowan, John Moses, Dan Armstrong, Paul Owens and Donal Macraith came up with the idea of the tournament as a way to boost morale, especially amongst officers in Scotland who are facing an uncertain future.

Stuart said: "We're all spread over such a large area so it's great to get everyone together. It's also a bit of a fitness thing and gives us something else to train for."

D-Division Scotland's Chief Inspector David Gray opened the tournament last month with all 4 teams observing a minutes silence to remember those involved in the recent terror attacks on Manchester Arena and London Bridge, and the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower.

CI Gray said: "At a time when there has been so much bad news, it is great to have an event that BTP officers and staff from across the Force can take part in their own time and show togetherness. A special thanks to Stenhousemuir FC, Virgin Trains and ScotRail to supporting the event too."

Results so far
D-Div Scotland: 1 v 4 : C-Div NE
B-Div London: 9 v 2 : C-Div NW
Tournament Top-Scorer: B-Division's PC Lewis Todd is the current top-scorer with 4 goals.

The second BTP Virgin Trains Divisional Cup event will be held on Thursday 31st August in Leeds. Contact any of the event organisers via internal email if you'd like to come along and support the teams.
